SilenZone™ Attenuators & Silencers
Is This The Right Solution For Your Acoustic Needs?
We prefer the term “Attenuator” to “Silencer” because they reduce (attenuate) the level of sound rather than remove it completely; thus, “Silencer” can be misleading.
Attenuators work in there three distinct ways to reduce sound:
- Passive: Use acoustically absorptive material to convert sound energy to (a little bit) of heat. Passive attenuators work for a wide range of applications, usually involving the movement of air (e.g. through duct work or a room).
- Reactive: use resonance to absorb the sound energy. Reactive Attenuators are usually supplemented by passive attenuation to broaden the range of frequencies, typically for combustion engine exhaust systems such as vehicles or generators.
- Active: create additional sound energy that is 180⁰ out of phase with and cancels out some of the unwanted sound energy. Active attenuation is becoming more widely used, mainly for specialist applications such as noise cancelling microphones, some ear muffs, or reducing noise in vehicles and aircrafts.
Noise Control Engineering projects make most use of passive attenuation for a range of similar purposes such as reducing noise within duct systems which may be from fans; from equipment such as compressors, pumps & generators which may be indoors (e.g. in a plantroom); or outdoors; such as generators, refrigeration plant, or extract systems.
Made Strong, Made Well
Though each has several variations, there are two main configurations of passive attenuators that suit a verity of applications:
- Rectangular Attenuators (Straight or Bend configuration) typically consist of several absorptive elements (splitters) that subdivide an aperture or duct into one or more modules with acoustically absorptive sides.
- Circular and O’Square attenuators consist of a circular duct with an acoustically absorptive inner surface, possibly with a concentric central pod that is also acoustically absorptive.
SilenZone™ Rectangular Attenuators
Is This The Acoustic Solution For You?
Acoustical Control Engineers’ selection of SilenZone™ Rectangular Splitter Attenuators provides the configuration flexibility to achieve the necessary attenuation spectrum, prevent spectral prominence, and comply with the required airflow resistance.
Made Strong, Made Well
For maximum durability, internal stiffeners and end sections are usually constructed from pre-galvanised sheet steel with perforated pre-galvanised steel facings. Specific applications may use different materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, GRP, or plastic.
The perforated metal facing and acoustically transparent scrim, (or Melinex for some applications, such as foodsafe), protect the acoustically absorptive infill from mechanical damage and prevent fibre migration. The infill is chemically inert, non-hygroscopic, vermin-proof, and rot-proof, to discourage organic growth. In addition to self-colour surface finishes, attenuators can be painted (wet or powder-coated) or incorporate a plastisol coating from a standard colour range.

SilenZone™ Plantroom Attenuation/ Airflow Systems
Is This The Acoustic Solution For You?
Acoustical Control Engineers’ SilenZone™ Plantroom Attenuation/ Ventilation Systems provide the required level and frequency spectra of attenuation and the necessary rate of cooling airflow in a configuration to suit the layout and available space in the plantroom.
Every Plantroom Attenuation/ Ventilation System is unique due to the variation in plantroom layout, equipment, and the surrounding area’s sensitivity to noise.
Whether you need one of our standard packages or a custom solution, Contact Us so that we can work out the best solution for your specific requirements.
Made Strong, Made Well
A Plantroom Attenuation/Ventilation System usually comprises Intake & Extract Attenuation, PreVent Weather Louvres and/or Roof Cowl Assemblies, Extract Fans, and Plenum Sections. Depending upon the application this may also include other products such as Acoustic Doors, Acoustic Panels, Fire Dampers, Acoustic Louvres, Louvred Doors, Plant Benches & Vibration Isolation.
Where noise sensitive areas within the same building are close to the plantroom it may be necessary to supplement the airborne sound insulation of the plantroom walls, ceiling (and possibly floor). In many cases this is most cost effectively achieved with conventional materials rather than specific “acoustic” products; we can specify suitable constructions to achieve the required level of performance.
Applications
- Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, H&V
- Air Compressors
- Boilers
- Generators, CHP, UPS
